Chapter 5

Sleeping in was a luxury I usually denied myself, but the bed kept calling me back every time my alarm went off. Finally, guilt set in, and I rolled out, only two hours later than originally planned. There was more moving to do, this time my business tools.

Insurance had been paying for a storage facility for my tools, but that expense would shift back to me in just a few weeks. While lack of space at my old house required the use of a storage location, it was a pain to stop by and retrieve the tools and equipment I needed for the daily jobs. Here at the rental house, there was plenty of room; in fact, a whole section of garage that I hoped would work.

After making a pot of coffee, I grabbed my ever-present notebook and went to investigate. My initial impression of a third car space in the garage was incorrect; it was a complete and separate storage room. One wall was covered with pegboard, complete with empty hooks and hangers, perfect for all my small hand tools while the other long wall had built in shelving. Sitting in the center of the space was a rolling bin with nine empty tubs perfect for all the odds and ends that never seemed to work on shelves. Once again, my phone came out to capture the design and efficiency of the space. I just wish I could afford to duplicate everything I loved about this house.

After half a pot of coffee and a full breakfast, I was on the road, headed to check on the dogs. My visits had gotten so routine with them that I no longer interrupted their day. They acknowledged my presence, accepted my hugs and ear rubs, but were more interested in chasing a swarm of bugs that were flying around the yard. “Tomorrow, I promise,” I said to them as I checked their food and water. Doug had been more than patient and I missed Mopsy and Oreo.

The rest of the day was spent moving boxes and tools from the storage facility. I underestimated the number of trips required due to the size of equipment. Ladders and large equipment required separate trips, or I risked damaging both my truck and the tools. By the fourth trip, my back and legs were screaming from the lifting and climbing in and out of the truck bed. Before the next move, I swore to invest in a set of ramps or even that automatic tail lift gate that I had been considering.

My final stop at the storage facility included sweeping out the room and throwing away the bowls of cat litter scattered across the floor. The litter helped to keep the moisture at bay in the non-climate-controlled space. I was exhausted but pleased by the results of my hard work. Now every single tool and piece of equipment I owned for my business was stored at the rent house. It just needed to be unpacked and organized.
